*Additional: Statement of Support for New Markey Eshoo Legislation

WASHINGTON, D.C. (February 8, 2021) – Today marks the 25th anniversary of the landmark, bipartisan Telecommunications Act of 1996. The following statement can be attributed to Chip Pickering, CEO of INCOMPAS, a former Member of Congress from Mississippi and a Senate staffer who worked to pass the '96 Act for Sen. Trent Lott:

“Today we celebrate the Telecommunications Act of 1996, the competition constitution that brought new networks, launched the internet revolution, and connects our schools and libraries to the future.

“A true bipartisan success story, the landmark law united Republicans and Democrats around competition policy that has resulted in US leadership in tech, innovation, education and jobs of the future. From E-Rate provisions to freedom defining Section 230, the Telecom Act of 1996 is an example of greatness achieved through unity. We still have bigger broadband goals to reach, and mountains to climb. But the incredible leaps on the foundation of the 96 Act must never be taken for granted as they continue to serve as a springboard for future generations of creative thinkers and innovators.”

In Support of the Markey Eshoo Legislation:

“INCOMPAS welcomes and supports legislation that brings the power of faster, better internet to each and every American. The National Broadband Plan for the Future Act, legislation from Senator Ed Markey and Rep. Anna Eshoo, builds on the foundation of policies they have long championed with clear, smart goals toward future growth, connectivity and inclusion.”
